Day 10... Trains, Planes, and Automobiles

Today was our last day in sunny California! It took us all morning, but we packed up all SIX suitcases and headed out.  Poppy had one final stop to make… In and Out Burger!  We all had a double-double with fries and a drink.  It was ok… I really wanted the Chick-fil-a that was next door but Poppy said I had to eat at the burger place.

After lunch, we headed back to the airport to return the car.  We then had a driver shuttle us to Union Station.  That’s right…we are getting on a train!  In case you didn’t know, Poppy planned this trip for my 40th birthday.  My favorite show is I Love Lucy and some of my favorite episodes are their trip to California.  When they come home, they take the train.  So here we are… going home on a train.  Actually, we are not going home but headed to Chicago.  We got to Union Station around 4:30 pm.  The entry area is massive!

We had no idea where to go or what to do.  We finally found the check in area which was upstairs in what seemed like a lawyer’s office.  It was the strangest thing.  Anyways, the girls and I had the bright idea to pack all of our things that we would need on the train and in Chicago all in one suitcase.  Sounds like a great idea right?  Well, it was until they weighed the suitcase and it was 13 pounds over the limit.  So, in the middle of the room we were unpacking and rearranging everything!  Nice!   Once we had all of that taken care of the lady told us we had time to explore the station before leaving.  We went back downstairs, took some pictures and got some coffee.  When we went back upstairs, we noticed their were very few people left waiting.  Come to find out, we just about missed our train!  Good grief!  They put us on a golf cart and shuttled us quickly to the train.  Thankfully we made it with no further incidents!

The four of us climbed aboard a VERY narrow staircase and proceeded to our cabins.  We have 2 rooms right next to each other.  Each room has a VERY TEENY TINY bathroom (might be smaller than the airplane bathroom BUT includes the shower), a small little sink, a chair, a couch/bottom bunk, top bunk, and a folding table.

By 6:40pm, the train was pulling away.  All four of us watched out the window as we headed out!  Before long, the head waiter came around making dinner reservations.  We chose, or should I say Julianna chose for us to eat at 7:30pm. The girls and I played Racko until dinner time.

At 7:30pm, we walked one car over to the dinning car. The four of us sat in a both together.  We had several menu selections to choose from and we all picked steak.  Even though there are prices on the menu, our meals are included in our trip. Our meal came with dinner rolls, a salad, the meat, mixed veggies, a choice of baked potato or mashed potatoes, and a dessert.  Everything was very tasty!  Just in case your wondering, you are supposed to tip your waiter on a a train.

After dinner, we went back to our cabins and started to blog about todays adventures.  It is dark now on the train and we are all piled in one room for the moment.  The train has made a number of stops already-Fullerton CA, Riverside CA, San Bernardino CA, Victorville CA, and we are currently stopped in Barstow CA. Our ears are all popping as we climb through mountains to the high desert.  We go through the Grand Canyon around 3am.  Hate that we won’t get to see that!

Until tomorrow…

Day 9... A Day with Mickey and Friends

Good news!  Poppy is better and we were able to tackle Disneyland, California Adventures, and a bit of Downtown Disney.  Thank goodness the California heat wave that has arrived was not quite as bad today.  It was still hot...but not 112!  Anyways... our day started early-we opened the park at 8am and left at 9:30pm.  We did as much as our feet would allow.  Our hotel literally backs up to Disney's parking lot so we just walked right over, got on the Disney bus, and had them drop us off at the gate.

We ended up at California Adventures first and grabbed a fast past for a ride in Radiator Springs.  Next, for the roller coaster, California Screamer.  This roller coaster reminded me of the scream machine at Six Flags.  The girls loved it!  They ended up riding several times since the line was super short.

Once they got their fill of it we headed over to Soarin' Around the World.  I absolutely loved this ride!  If you've been to Epicot, it's similar to their Soarin'.

While on that side of the park, we did Turtle Talk with Crush-a cute interactive show with Crush from Finding Nemo.  We also rode a cute little Monster's Inc. ride-Mike and and Sulley to the Rescue.  Their was just no way to do everything, but we tried to get lots of pictures of everything around.

From their we went to use our fast passes at Radiator Springs Racers.  Oh my goodness!!  This was our favorite ride of the day!  It was similar to the Test Track ride at Epicot but so much better.  You end up in a race car racing another vehicle throughout Ornament Valley.  It was so much fun!  The Radiator Springs area of the park was a very neat replica of the movie Cars.

Craig treated himself to a Churro here while the girls had a corndog.  While I was waiting on them to get their food I spotted Captain America and later Spiderman.

Around this time we moved on to Disneyland. The first thing we noticed was the size of the castle.  Poor Sleeping Beauty!  Her castle is only half the size of Cinderella's.  We could not believe how small it was! Julianna looked up the difference in size and their is 100 feet difference between the too castles.

You can barely see the castle behind us

We did the Sleeping Beauty Castle walk through experience.  It was neat to walk through the castle.  After that we went to Tomorrowland and road Finding Nemo's Submarine Voyage.  Cute little ride but not for the claustrophobic.

From their we to Fantasyland to ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

We couldn't leave the park without going to It's a Small World.  Several of the original rides we had hoped to ride were closed for renovations.  After It's a Small we headed back to California Adventures.

We had dinner reservations at Wine Country Trattoria.  All I can say is fancy, fancy!  We had the most delicious steak, potatoes, green beans and dessert assortment.  We ended up at this restaurant because the dinner included reserved viewing for The World of Color show.

After dinner we went to Downtown Disney to hunt for a few souvenirs.  We also toured the Grand Californian (California's version of the Grand Floridian and looks nothing like it) and road the Monorail.

Our evening ended back at California Adventures for the World of Color show.  This show was amazing!  I have never seen anything like it.  It was described in the brochure as a symphony of water, light, color, and animation.  The show was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and Mickey Mouse.  The show projects images from Disney and Disney Pixar films onto a 19,000 sq.ft. water  "screen" created by nearly 1,200 fountains shooting water up to 200 feet in the air.  Music accompanies the images, as well as fire, fountain, fog and laser effects.

What a day!  It was magical for sure!  Now let me warn you...the next 2 days might be questionable for a posted blog.  I have no idea how much, if any, access to the internet I will have.  SO it may be Friday before I can post day 10 and 11.
This quick clip might clue you in as to what we will be doing next...
Next adventure

Until tomorrow (or Friday)...
